Nuxeo 5.2.M3 and Nuxeo WebEngine 1.0.RC have just been released!

Work is still going on for finishing Nuxeo 5.2 before the end of this year. The Nuxeo Developer Day on Dec. 1st will be an opportunity to discuss the new features and the roadmap. You are free to join as there a few more available seats.

Le plan “France numérique 2012” présenté hier par Eric Besson fait l’impasse sur le secteur du logiciel. Seules 3 mesures sur 154 concernent le secteur du logiciel (hors jeu vidéo), et ne répondent pas de manière significative aux attentes du secteur. En particulier, on ne peut que déplorer l’impasse qui a été faite sur les propositions du rapport Attali en faveur du logiciel libre.

C’est d’autant plus regrettable que le plan note que “le logiciel libre représente un potentiel économique et industriel considérable” et que “la France dispose dans ce domaine d’atouts reconnus aux niveaux européen et international” (notons que plusieurs cabinets d’analyse américains ont noté cet été que la France était “championne du monde” dans ce secteur).

Détaillons les trois mesures concernant le logiciel dans le Plan Besson:

• L’action 63, “Créer un réseau “Logiciel” de correspondants dans au moins dix villes clés de l’industrie du logiciel, en parallèle du réseau “TIC” d’Ubifrance” vise, et c’est un objectif légitime, à favoriser la capacité d’exportation des éditeurs de logiciels français. Néanmoins, elle reste à un niveau relativement symbolique, et l’on peut même s’interroger sur l’intérêt d’avoir un réseau “logiciel” séparé du réseau “TIC”, tant les acteurs de l’informatique (éditeurs et sociétés de services, notamment) constituent un écosystème qui doit travailler de concert pour gagner des parts de marchés.

• Les actions 64 et 65, “Promouvoir un affichage séparé des prix des logiciels et systèmes d’exploitation pré-installés” et “Permettre la vente découplée de l’ordinateur et de son logiciel d’exploitation”, sont des revendications de longue date du groupe “Détaxe Windows” lancé par Roberto Di Cosmo en 1998, et plus généralement de la communauté du logiciel libre et de ses principales associations. Elles permettront d’accélérer la diffusion de systèmes d’exploitation libres comme Linux auprès d’un public de connaisseurs, sans avoir cependant d’impact significatif sur le grand public qui lui découvrira plutôt Linux et l’univers des logiciels libres grand public via les Netbook.

Surtout, ces deux dernières mesures ne concernent qu’un domaine spécifique du logiciel, celui des systèmes d’exploitation, et n’aident en rien les éditeurs de logiciels applicatifs, qui réalisent pourtant l’essentiel du chiffre d’affaires du secteur.

En tant que fondateur d’un des deux leaders français de l’édition de logiciels libres, je suis donc déçu par le plan présenté par M. Besson, et je m’associe aux différentes demandes des organisations représentatives du secteur pour que des mesures plus spécifiques, en faveur du secteur du logiciel en général et du logiciel libre en particulier, soient annoncées rapidement. Des recommandations d’achats claires en direction de l’administration, exigeant le respect de véritables standards ouverts et interopérables, et favorisant les logiciels libres à qualité et coût égal à leurs équivalents propriétaires, font ainsi partie des mesures que le gouvernement devrait prendre en priorité.

Je note enfin que dans le contexte de crise économique actuel, le logiciel libre constitue une réponse économiquement pertinente aux réductions de budgets qui menacent les services informatiques dans les entreprises et les administrations, qui pourront ainsi poursuivre leurs investissements en faveur de la réactivité et de la productivité. Face à la crise qui est son soucis principal actuellement, le Gouvernement ne pourra que reconnaître les atouts du logiciel libre dans ce contexte et prendre les mesures naturelles qui assureront la meilleure compétitivité possible aux entreprises françaises.

I’m happy to report that we’ve finished setting up the conference program for the first Nuxeo Developer Day in Paris, which will take place on 1st December, as a “community session” during the awesome Open World Forum.

The conference will be a unique opportunity for you to meet and discuss with the Nuxeo core developers, and to exchange your experiences as users of the framework with fellow Nuxeo applications developers.

Only caveat: there are a limited number of available seats (50) and if you intend to attend (attendance is free, BTW), we ask you to say so by sending a mail to devday@nuxeo.com.

I’m pleased to announce that we are organizing, with the help of several other people, the first “big event” in the Nuxeo Community: the Nuxeo Developer Day.

It will take place during the “Open World Forum” event in Paris, on Dec. 1 2008.

The program is still under construction, but in any case I can promise it will be intense and will please even the most hardcore developers.

Here are some highlights:

• What’s new in Nuxeo 5.2 (codenamed “Chicago”)
• Roadmap for 2009 and beyond
• Interoperability (including the emerging CMIS standard)
• Several case studies from all across Europe (Spain, Sweden, UK…)

WebEngine is a lightweight, versatile, content-centric, open source web framework to quickly build and deliver next generation content-oriented web applications.

WebEngine relies on the Nuxeo content infrastructure (OSGi runtime, component architecture, document repository, ECM services, etc.) to provide a component-based programing model and a web development model for building componentized content-centric applications (such as wikis, blogs, content-oriented websites, etc.).

WebEngine relies heavily on the REST paradigm: URLs are mapped to the hierarchical content repository, content is accessed using GETs, user actions are GETs and POSTs, etc. Hence it’s very easy and straightforward to write RESTful apps using WebEngine.

WebEngine is fully extensible and componentized, thanks to OSGi (all components are OSGi bundles) and Nuxeo Runtime’s extension points.

WebEngine can run either standalone (with startup time <4s) using the Nuxeo Runtime launcher and the embedded Jetty 6, or in a full-blown Java EE app server such as JBoss. WebEngine can also be connected to any Nuxeo EP instance (and Nuxeo Core repository) and be used to expose / publish its content to the web.

We have released Nuxeo EP 5.1.3.2 earlier this week. This is a maintenance release primarily focussed on bug fixes and small improvements.

You can download it as

• a multi-platform installer

or:

• a simple ZIP for headless installation

The changelog for this release is available.

Minor, but anyway noteworthy improvements include:

• Nuxeo EP now works on a Java 6 JVM, which can lead to significant performance improvements (up to 100% for certain workloads, according to some internal benchmarks).

• Full text indexing has been improved and made faster.

• Some tweaks have been done to enable communication with the new (soon to be released and announced) “LiveEdit” plugin for Internet Explorer, Firefox and MS-Word.
